I grown-up in former USSR, where Joe Dassin was popular and very much loved. It was late 70s. Back then there were many musical programmes on radio and TV, where we could see him and enjoy his velvety voice and beautiful music. He was simply adored by soviet audience......
Many, many years later, in 2003, I left Russia to live in England. One day I asked my English Husband if he knows famous French singer Joe Dassin, and was surprised (and disappointed) by his answer that he has never ever heard of him. I tried to get him listen some of Joe's well known songs but without any recognition.
In 2004, on our 1st wedding anniversary we decided to go to Paris. It was romantic and exciting few days in this lovely city. In one of the record's shops I bought CD of Joe Dasssin - "Eternel". Some of his songs were familiar to me but there were many of others I never knew. I started playing this CD in my car while travelling to and from work and very soon I realised that this music and this voice are part of my live. It's me, my memories, my nostalgia, my pleasure, my escape from depression. It's something very personal and belongs to me and only me.....
Since then, 16 years later, I still listening Joe Dassin. I got more of his discs (and DVDs) , and every time when I needed to upgrade my old car, I choose the model with CD player built in.
Am I old fashion? Or is it just some kind of obsession? Both perhaps.....
More than that. I started learning French. I want to understand lyrics (without finding translation in Internet) and sing together with Joe. I love French. It's quite difficult to learn but quickly became my favourite hobby.
I really, really wish Jules Dassin to come to UK and introduce this timeless beautiful music to British public in memory of his father.
