HI!
I was listening to this song (Marie-Jeanne) and of course it's a sad song. Like many of his love songs. Anyway. It talks about this guy first seing the girl and talking to her in church, then she is seen at the sawmill, then both of them are seen on the bridge throwing something off the bridge, then she kills herself and he has thoughts about it. For some reason it makes me think she was pregnant, had an abortion, threw the baby off the bridge and then couldn't stand it and killed herself. Am I completely off track?
I would appreciate an opinion, my e-mail address is adinavereanu@hotmail.com!

Hi, Adina!
I actually think you may be quite right about the contents of the song. I also thaught about the thing the girl threw from the bridge, and it could be a baby, all right. In fact, the song (which is an adaptation of Bobbie Gentry's classic, Ode to Billy Joe) is a real mindbender - we have already had a discussion on what really happened in Bourg-les-Essonne in the French Forum. _________________ Just tell him Big Joe was here this morning
And he was here this morning, yeah, but now he's gone |

Hi Michel!
Thanks for the info. I went to the French forum (I speak French) and found the discussion you were talking about (I actually had a hard time finding it) and I read everybody's posts. I also went to check on the ideas people might have had on other websites, and I actually did find someone who said it could have been a baby!
Thanks again,
Adina |
